Club championship – Dräi Echelen

October 16th

  • LuxOC organisation  event of the month  race

Meet at

Place de l’Europe, Kirchberg, on the benches outside the “Tempo” restaurant, to the south of and behind the Philharmonie concert hall. Look for the LuxOC beach flag.

Parking – Trois Glands car park, cost EUR 1.60 per hour. (Note that the Place de l’Europe car park is now shut on Sundays.)

Free parking – Glacis car park, then take the tram towards LuxExpo.

Public transport – Tram to the Philharmonie stop, then cross boulevard JFK and walk around the Philharmonie building.

Train to Pfaffenthal, then up the funicular to the Roud Bréck tram stop – the Philharmonie is then only about 300 metres walk away.

Facilities

Almost none. The event will be outdoors, based on a small folding table. (If rainy, there may be some shelter on the terrace of the “Tempo” restaurant.) Someone will be there all the time, so it will be safe to leave bags. Bring your own folding chair? Public toilets (50 cent coin) in the building at the top of the Roud Bréck funicular.

Start times

10.30 until 12.00 or so. Controls will be removed from 13.30.

Entries

Please register in advance, using the O’Punch website, by 24.00 on Friday 14 October, so we know how many maps to print. No fee.

This event is open ONLY to Luxembourg OC and its invited guests - but please contact orienteer@orienteering.lu before entries close, if you are not a LuxOC or SudOLux member and want to be invited!

Start point

20 metres from the meeting point. Finish at the meeting point.

Format

Two courses

Course 1       5.9 km (optimum route, 4.0 km straight line), 235 metres climbing – with technical orienteering and route choices. The Championship course for D/H16- and older, and all adults.

Course 2       2.5 km (optimum route, 1.9 km straight line), 55 metres climbing – a technically easy course, the Championship course for D/H14- and younger. Also open to older beginners.

Results will be posted on the Helga website.

As in previous years, our LuxOC Club Champions will be decided using a handicap system, which compares standardised running speeds of top competitors in every class with those of H and D21’s.

Equipment

Flags are 15cm kites. Courses will be timed using the SPORTident (SIAC enabled) system. Bring your own SI “dibber” if you have one. If you do not, the Club’s stock is available, with numbers being pre-allocated: please enter “rent” when registering on the O’Punch website, although there is no charge for renting.

Map

The north half of the map used for the 2021 Luxembourg City Race. 1:4,000 ISSproM 2021, by Thibaut Derenne. The map does not show park seats. Laser-printed on A4 waterproof paper, with courses and control descriptions (IOF symbols) pre-marked.

Terrain

For both courses – the public park around the MUDAM museum, including the remains of the complex XVIII century Vauban fortress, and the Drai Eechelen woodland valley, steep in places.

For Course 1, long and steep descents to (and ascents from!) the Pfaffenthal area – urban orienteering along the banks of the Alzette. Off the paths in the Drai Eechelen woodland valley, brambly undergrowth (leg protection recommended) and some high crags.

\Race instructions

  • A significant area of the woodland is fenced off due to construction work on a new footbridge between the Roud Bréck bus stop and the MUDAM museum – this is shown as out-of-bounds on the map, and affects several route choice options. Keep out – this is a condition of our use of the area! But note that tracks alongside the outer side of fences may still be used.
  • Signage shows pedestrian use of the rue du Fort Thuengen road tunnel under Place de l”Europe as forbidden – it is shown on the map, but must not be used by orienteers.
  • Course 1 crosses several roads in the Alzette Valley that are marked on the map as out-of bounds along much of their length. This out-of-bounds marking along roads may be ignored – but all other out-of-bounds areas shown on the map must be respected.
  • You must “punch” (by placing your “dibber” in the hole in the timing unit) at the Start point trestle to begin the timing of your run, and at the Finish trestle to stop it.
  • Maps are to be picked up 5 metres after the start point. You are responsible for picking up a map showing the course you have entered!
  • Control descriptions will not be issued separately. The control descriptions for Course 1 are on the back of the map.

Safety

Everyone takes part entirely at their own risk. Be careful near steep drops. Course 1 has one mandatory road crossing point near the end of the course – please obey the Code de la Route here, as well as when crossing all other roads. Course 2 does not cross any roads, and so is safe for unaccompanied children.

After the run

In the Place de l’Europe neighbourhood, very few places offering refreshment are open on Sunday. In the Infinity shopping centre across boulevard JFK, the “Golden Bean” coffee bar and the “L’Osteria” Italian restaurant should be open.
