Our Club is currently in the happy situation of steadily attracting new members, and since Covid we have managed to put on many more small orienteering “happenings” for our “grass roots” members. We have also been lucky in receiving sponsorship support back in 2020 from Mastercard via Advanzia Bank, which has meant that we have been able to buy a proper electronic timing system. This means that, if we want, we can always give everyone a print of their time to every control, and post the results of our “happenings" online.

The slight downside to being up to date with orienteering technology is that a timing system does need a computer to operate it. And more importantly, one or more people who can then operate that computer! At the moment there aren’t many such operators in the Club, which does mean that during all our events it’s very often the same one or two people sitting behind the laptop all morning or evening.

So, in an effort to spread the load a bit more widely, we are offering a training evening with a difference - instead of a run with a map, we will have a session of two hours or so, to learn how a timing and results system works!

The plan is to have the evening at our Club’s legal “home” (that's David and Maggie’s home) at 55 am Steffesgaart, L-5222 Sandweiler. The time and date? Starting at around 19.45 on Wednesday 6 March.

The system the Club uses most often is the HELGA system, which is also used at most events in Belgium and in several other orienteering countries. Luckily, Michael Hock, who has developed this system over many years, is an active member of our Club, and he has kindly agreed to join me in leading the training. It will be completely “hands on”, meaning that you will need to bring your own laptop. (Electricity and wi-fi to download software will however be freely available!)

The laptop needs to be one that can work with the HELGA system. Also, preferably, you will have already downloaded the various bits of software or apps that make the HELGA system work. The technical details are listed out at the bottom of this email.

The aim of the training is to leave you feeling confident that you can set up a “training” in the HELGA system, and register participants into the system either before the day (easier than when busy on the day) or when they arrive on the day. And also to be able to operate the download station, and the miniprinter, after people have had their go around the course.

To make it more real, there will be a practical exercise involving a tiny 400 metre course for people to walk round (weather permitting), so please bring your own SI “dibber” if you own one. We’ll also show you how to check who is still out on the course, and how to post a set of results on the internet.

If you are interested in joining the evening, please let me know no later than the day before.

Hope to see you then
