  • 23

The fourth event in the 2024 Luxembourg Summer Urban League (LuxSUL) series, and the last before LuxSUL’s summer break until early September.

Meet at

55 am Steffesgaart, L-5222 Sandweiler.

Please park only in designated parking bays in the nearby streets, and not on the pavements, and walk a short way.

Public transport – infrequent, not the greatest… Sandweiler train station is 2.5km away! Buses 411 and 421 come from the Bonnevoie tram terminus or the stop Rocade 3 at the back of the Gare (leaving there at 18.15,18.35, 18.45, 19.05, and 19.15, so the timetables say, with a 12-15-minute ride). Bus 456 comes from the LuxExpo bus station at 18.20, 18.50 and 19.20, with a 10-minute ride). Get off at the “Koschterjanshaff” stop – the last one in Sandweiler, by the Esso station. Walk back up rue Principale, turn left into am Gronn at the hairdressers, and left again on to am Steffesgaart.

Buses back to town are as scarce as hen’s teeth – 411 at 31 minutes past the hour, 421 2 minutes later (but not 22.33), and a solitary 456 at 21.51!

Facilities

Safe storage for bags and bikes, toilets. Changing space available.

Start times

18.30 until 19.30 or so. Controls will be removed starting at 20.30.

Entries

No fee – but please sign up via the calendar in the members’ section on the Club website, saying which course you would like to do. Or let orienteer@orienteering.lu know at least a day in advance if you plan to come, and are not a LuxOC member.

Start point

Start and finish are both directly outside the meeting point.

Format

Three courses

Rabbit   about 3.0 km – medium, some gentle climb

Deer     about 5.0 km – longer, a bit more climb, but still gentle

Squirrel     about 1.2km – just for children, not crossing any busy roads

Distances are straight line – optimum routes are about 40% longer.

Controls must be visited in the order set. Flags are 15cm kites. Timing at each control using SPORTident (SIAC enabled). Bring your own SI timing chip if you can, but if not, you can borrow a LuxOC one.

Timing

Timing of all participants to the nearest second, results will be published, and included in the LuxSUL league table.

Terrain

Mainly residential urban streets and paths. But, because the streets of Sandweiler have been used so often, this time the run includes a forest section for the Deer and Rabbit courses. Trail shoes optimal.

Map(s)

1:7,500 (1:5,000 for Squirrel) ISOM-ish, 5 metre contours. Laser-printed, on Pretex semi-waterproof paper. The forest section is on a separate map, which has been derived from LiDAR data – so while the contours are very accurate, the mapping of paths might be a bit suspect!

Safety

Everyone takes part entirely at their own risk. Please take great care, especially on or crossing the more main roads. High visibility clothing strongly recommended.

After the run

Please stay on after the run for our Summer Social and chat. Plenty of food and drink will be provided, but contributions in kind are much appreciated.
